[previous post in the series - #4 - Not Praying]

The Fifth Major Sin – Not Paying Zakat.

Allah (swt) says in the Quran:

“And let not those who covetously withhold of the gifts which Allah Hath given them of His Grace, think that it is good for them: Nay, it will be the worse for them: soon shall the things which they covetously withheld be tied to their necks Like a twisted collar, on the Day of Judgment…” (Surah Ali-Imran 3:180)

And,

“…Woe to the Mushrikeen (polytheists) who do not pay Zakat..” (Surah Fussilat 41:6-7)

And also,

“…Then give them (those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend them for the sake of Allah) ‘good tidings’ of a painful punishment, a day when it (the hoarded wealth) will be heated in Hell-Fire, and then their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it. (And it will be said to them:) ‘This is what you hoarded up for yourselves, so taste whatever you used to hoard!’” (Surah At-Taubah 9:34-35)

Ibn Mas’ood (ra) in explaining these verses quoted above said: “(On the Day of Resurrection), one Dinar will not be placed on top of another Dinar, nor A Dirham on top of another Dirham; rather, a persons’s skin will be stretched so much that every Dinar and Dirham (on which he did not pay Zakat) will touch his skin and its heat will be felt. and if they ask: ‘Why have the forehead, the sides, and the back been singled out (for mention is this verse)?” the answer is: “When a miserly rich person sees a poor person approaching him, he frowns wrinkles, his forehead, and turns his side (to him), and when the poor person comes close to him, he turns away, showing him his back. that is why these parts of the body are mentioned in those verses.”

[previous post in the series - # 3:Practicing Magic]

The Fourth Major Sin – Not Praying.

Allah (swt) says in the Quran:

“Then there succeeded them a generation which neglected prayers and followed lust. They will meet with destruction (Ghayy), excepting the one who repents and believes and acts righteously.”  (Surah Maryam 19:59-60)

Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) explained that ‘neglected’ here does not mean that they completely abandoned prayers, but that they delayed them to the end of their prescribed times. Sa’id bin Musayyab, a great Imam following the generation of the companions, elaborated on this, saying: “A person neglects prayers if he delays the noon prayer up to afternoon prayer time, afternoon prayer up to almost sunset prayer time, sunset prayer up to evening prayer time, and evening prayer up to morning prayer time, while delaying morning prayer until just before sunrise. If anyone dies without repentance while continuing in this manner, Allah has promised Ghayy for him, and that is a valley in Hell which is very deep and has foul food”.

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) from the

Prophet (peace be upon him) is that among the sayings he relates from his Lord (may He be glorified) is that He said:

يا عبادي إني حرمت الظلم على نفسي وجعلته بينكم محرما فلا تظالموا

“O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you,
so do not oppress one another.

O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided,
so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you

O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed,
so seek food of Me and I shall feed you.

O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed,
so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you.

O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins,
so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.

O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me,
and you will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me.

O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you

to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything.

O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you

to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My kingdom in anything.

O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it.

O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him who finds good praise Allah,
and let him who finds other, then blame no one but himself. “

(Sahih Muslim)

[previous post in the series - # 1 : Shirk]

The Second Major Sin – Murder.

Allah (swt) says in the glorious Quran:

“And if anyone kills a believer deliberately, his recompense is Hell, to remain therein forever. And Allah’s anger will be upon him and His curse, and a great punishment will be prepared from him.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:93)

And,

“[The servants of the Most-Merciful are, among others,] Those who do not call upon any other god together with Allah, nor kill any person who Allah has prohibited (killing) except in (the course of) justice, nor commit Zina (fornication or adultery)- and whoever does that will incur guilt; the punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection and he will remain in it forever, disgraced, excepting the one who repents and believes and acts righteously.” (Surah Al-Furqan 25:68-70)

And also,

“On account of that (the killing of one of the descendants of Adam by his brother), we prescribed for the Children of Israel that if someone kills a person, unless it is (retaliation) for the murder of another or for spreading corruption on earth, it will be as if he had killed the whole of man-kind…” (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:32)

And in another verse,

“When the girl who was buried (alive) is asked for what crime she was killed…” (Surah At-Takwir 81:8-9)

[previous post in the series - What is a Major Sin]

The First Major Sin – associating anyone or anything with Allah

The greatest of all major sins (Akbarul Kaba’ir) is Shirk, which is associating anyone or anything with Allah (swt), and it is of two kinds.

The first kind is to believe that Allah has an equal or to worship something or someone other than Him, such as a stone, a tree, a star, the sun, the moon, or a prophet, a saint, or an angel. This is the greatest Shirk, about which Allah (swt) says:

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating anything with Him, and He forgive whatever is other than that to whomever He wills…” (Surah An-Nisa 4:48) and (Surah An-Nisa 4:116)

and,

“Indeed, associating (anything with Allah) is a great wrong.” (Surah Luqman 31:13)

and also,

“…Indeed, the one who associates anything with Allah, Allah will forbid him the Garden, and his abode is the Fire…” (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:72)

Such verses are quite numerous in the Quran. The word ‘Shirk’ and its derivatives repeats approximately in 165 verses, and there are many other verses of similar meaning as well.

Whoever ascribes partners to Allah (swt), i.e makes Shirk, and dies as Mushrik (polytheist) is definitely an inhabitant of the Fire, just as anyone who believes in Allah and dies a believer is an inhabitant of the Garden. even though he may be punished in the Fire first.
